Tips For Travelers

  • CLOTHING - Packing for the Keys can be as light as a bathing suit and flip-flops to resort casual. There are very few places in the Keys that require formal attire (You can drive up to Miami for that). A shirt with a collar is pretty dressed up here! Remember, fun-in-the-sun can result in an unpleasant sunburn. You might do well to include a lightweight long sleeve shirt, a pair of long pants, a windbreaker or light jacket, and depending on your choice of activities, perhaps water shoes/sandals. Sunglasses [polarized] and a hat complete your Keys wardrobe. Don't worry if you forget something there are plenty of local shops happy to provide your every need.

  • LOCATION - Instead of spending your entire trip on one key, consider visiting Miami, Upper Keys, Middle Keys, and Lower Keys. Each area is unique and has much to offer.

  • If you are planning on fishing or diving, be sure and get a copy of updated rules and regulations. These can be found in the front of our local phone book, on the Florida Fisheries website or by calling the Florida Marine Patrol. Local residents and authorities are not forgiving of violators.

  • JET-SKIERS - You are required to follow the same rules of navigation that any other vessel and avoid operating your craft in such a manner as to cause any harm to the environment or annoyance to other persons. For those of you that rent jet-skis, this is not usually a problem since rental craft are limited to designated areas and monitored by the rental company. If you are bringing your own jet-ski, be forewarned they are frowned upon by many locals and visitors. This is the unfortunate result of the irresponsible use of these watercraft in the past.

  • WILDLIFE - If you see anyone dumping garbage, harming or harassing birds, manatees, dolphins or any other wildlife, please report them to local law enforcement.

  • TRAPS - Lobster and crab traps have owners and for the most part they do not look fondly upon those who raid their traps. If you survive the wrath of being caught by a lobsterman, you may still be charged with a felony.

  • REEF - Visit the reef, and look as much as you like, but don not touch it. The reef is a fragile living creature that takes hundreds of years to repair even the slightest damage. Touching the coral or taking the sea creatures from their natural environment is prohibited by law.

  • BOATING - If you are navigating a boat, be sure and purchase and study official navigational charts before you launch. Running aground only damages the environment and your boat. Unlike your boat, only great periods of time can repair the environment. Laziness and inattentiveness are the cause of poor seamanship.

  • FISHING - When fishing for sport, enjoy your catch, but enjoy the release just as much. Help us preserve our natural fisheries and resources. If you are fishing for dinner (e.g. dolphin, grouper, snapper) take only enough for your meal. After all, the fun is in the catch, more tan in the meal.

  • LITTER - If you brought it with you, take it with you. Consider going a step further. If you see litter, please remove it. Discarded fishing line, plastic, cigarette butts can all become a hazard to marine animals.

  • SUNBATHING - The days of baby oil & iodine are over. There are several great products available for both tanning and sunblock. Sunblock is one of the great inventions for lovers of the outdoor. The higher the SPF factor the longer you can remain in the sun. Make sure to reapply after swimming.

  • PETS - If you are bringing pets, be careful not to leave them in cars for even the short time you would be in a store. Temperatures in a vehicle can soar to excess of 100 degrees in minutes. There are pet sitting services in Key Largo.
